(01) The problem

Two systems each kept a list of what was in the warehouse. The lists did not match. Nobody knew which one was right.

(02) What I built

I built software that holds the two lists side by side every night. Each row that does not agree goes to the team, with both numbers shown.

Each alert arrives withBoth rowsSide by sideA note that the check ran
Two separate stock lists of the same shelf, read at the same time each night.
What it reads
Three rows where the two systems disagree, both numbers shown, and a line saying the check ran and when.
What a person receives

Both pictures are examples. The shape is what was built; every word and number in them is made up, because the real ones are not mine to show.

(03) What went wrong

One night the check did not run, and nobody noticed.

How I found out

I found it myself a few days later, reading the nightly records. No message meant one of two things. Nothing was wrong, or nothing had run.

What I changed

It now sends a short note every night, even when there is nothing to fix. If the note does not come, that is the alarm.

(04) What happened

The team fixes a few rows each morning. They know the check ran, because the note came.
